Class Description
This class guides students through the process of developing a story, based on a personal experience, to respond to one of the Common App prompts (2026-2027 prompts are here). The story will reveal their character and personality, delving into experience(s) that influenced them and the resulting evolution of their thinking. Students will be taught to write about themselves in a manner that is expressive, detailed, revealing, and memorable.
Students spend the majority of each class working on their essays in a workshop-style environment. The class is designed to provide highly individualized support in a comfortable, low-pressure environment. Each class begins with a brief discussion of a sample college essay, narrative storytelling techniques, or literary devices that strengthen personal narratives. Students then spend the majority of the class working independently on their own essays while receiving one-on-one guidance from an instructor in private Zoom breakout rooms. Students are never required to share or discuss their essay topics with classmates, and each student works in their own private Google document. Classes are intentionally small allowing for extensive individualized feedback and coaching.
Students will leave the class with at least one polished essay. If a student knows which universities they intend to seek admission, they often finish a few of the supplemental essays as well.
About the instructor: Leslie Morgan has over 20 years of experience and has helped hundreds of students write their college essays as a college advisor at a private school, as a college admission essay tutor, and as a high school English teacher at a Boston-area private school. Her students have been accepted at top-ranked universities across the US and beyond.

'Thank you for saving my daughter and me from a series of heated arguments and migraines. Her college essay blew me away, and it apparently blew away her college admissions officers! She applied to her top two choices, which were not easy schools to get into, and she got into both! It's wonderful knowing she's now headed for college with the skills you gave her. She agreed she learned a lot from your course and was thankful to have her essay ready to submit in advance of the college application process. THANK YOU! " January, 2025. Boston, MA
